GOOGLE MAPS, EXPLAINED

Why is Google Maps not showing my business? Answered in under a minute

Two of the questions local business owners search for most, each answered in a short video with the written answer and the full transcript underneath. Every claim comes from Google's own help pages, linked under each answer.

Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

Google's help pages point to four reasons: the profile isn't verified, it's suspended, it's new, or it is showing, just not to the customer you have in mind. Find out which one it is before you change anything.

Not verified: Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. Suspended: a profile that breaks the guidelines won't show to other people until the issue is fixed. New: Google says rankings for a new business can take up to a month to appear.

The fourth is the one most owners miss: distance is measured from the person searching, so a customer across town sees a different list than you do. The next video goes deeper on that one. Google adds that businesses with complete and accurate details are more likely to show up in local results.

Your business is on Google. So why can't customers find it on the map? Google's own help pages point to four reasons. One: it isn't verified. Only verified businesses can show their info on Maps. Two: it's suspended. A profile that breaks the guidelines won't show until it's fixed. Three: it's new. Rankings for a new business can take up to a month to appear. Four: it's there, just not for that customer. Google says local results come down mainly to relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is measured from the person searching. So across town, they see a different list than you do. Google says complete, accurate details make you more likely to show up. So before you change anything, find out which of the four it is.

I show up first when I search my business. Why don't customers see me?

Because Google ranks the map from where the customer is standing, not from your shop. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and distance is measured from the person searching. From your own counter you're the closest business there is; a customer three miles away gets a list ranked from their spot.

You can't pay to change that. Google's words: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." What it says helps: complete, accurate business details, more reviews and positive ratings. (Google's page calls the third factor popularity in its summary and prominence in its heading; it's the same factor.)

You searched your business on Google Maps and came up first. That's the one search that doesn't count. Google's own help page says local results come down mainly to three things: relevance, distance and popularity. Distance is measured from the person searching. From where they're standing, not the middle of town. So from your own counter, you're the closest business there is. Three miles away, a customer's search is ranked from their spot, not yours. Same for every street in between. And you can't buy a better spot in that ranking. Google says there's no way to pay for one. What it does say helps: complete, accurate details. More reviews. Good ratings. So next time you check, ask who's holding the phone.

Verified, and still not showing?

  • Look for it the way Google says to: your business name plus your city on Google Maps, or while signed in to the account that manages the profile.
  • Edits can take up to 3 days to show.
  • Verified doesn't mean shown for every search. Google ranks profiles on many factors, so a verified profile can sit low or not appear for some searches.

Suspended? What Google says to do

  • Don't make a new profile for the same business.
  • Check the profile against Google's guidelines before you appeal: you can only appeal once.
  • Attach proof where the business name and address match the profile: a business registration, license, tax certificate or utility bill.
  • If your whole account is restricted, appeal that first on the My accounts page, then the profile.
  • Google emails the decision, and the appeals tool shows where it stands.
